The Rise of CBD

Just a few short years ago, the term CBD would have seemed foreign to most. However, things have changed significantly in a very short time. While THC had been gaining traction as a medicinal plant for decades, CBD came to the attention of the public with the creation of the “Charlotte’s Web” strain of Cannabis.

This CBD-heavy strain was developed by the Stanley brothers in 2011 and was named after Charlotte Figi; a young girl who, previously, had been experiencing over 300 grand mal seizures a week. While the strain was initially seen as a failure for THC enthusiasts, it quickly gained traction as a medicinal tool and began to take the public by storm – and for good reason!

By 2014, the FDA began conducting studies on CBD’s relation to seizures. Soon after, people began testing it out on a multitude of other health conditions including back pain, anxiety, insomnia, and more. And people kept seeing positive results when using CBD to treat their ailments.

By this time, word started to spread far and wide. With the passage of the US Farm Bill in 2018, which legalized industrial hemp, and the legalization of medical and recreational Cannabis at the state level, CBD products exploded in availability and popularity over the following 2 years.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family. It naturally occurs in the Cannabis plant and in hemp plants as well. CBD is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients in Cannabis, after THC of course. While CBD is a component of marijuana, the isolate in and of itself does not result in a traditional “high.”

So far, CBD has proven to be an incredible tool in the treatment of a variety of disorders. It has gained an impressive reputation as it does not seem to cause any health-related issues or dangerous side effects like many prescription medicines do. In fact, the World Health Organization noted that “CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.” Additionally, they stated that “there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

Is CBD Legal?

In most parts of the United States, the answer is Yes! This is true in Nevada, where OMG THC produces products for the legally-regulated Cannabis industry. However, in some states and Federally, Cannabis is still considered a Schedule 1 substance. Because of this, CBD may not be recognized as a legal medicine if it is derived straight from the Cannabis plant.

However, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 legalized “hemp,” which the legislation defined as cannabis that contains no more than 0.3% THC, nationwide. In other words, if a CBD product comes from a hemp plant, it’s legal; if it comes from a marijuana plant, it’s federally illegal, despite local laws. Again, in Nevada, CBD is legal to use and is available in dispensaries around the state.

How is CBD used?

CBD is available in a variety of convenient forms. OMG THC and Experience Premium Cannabis offer CBD in multiple delivery systems. This includes chocolate-covered fruits and nuts, chocolate bars, an extensive line of tinctures, gummies, and more.

Some of the most common CBD delivery systems are listed below. However, the delivery method ultimately depends on personal needs and/or preferences.

  • Edibles are a broad range of products to eat or drink, like gummies or chocolate bars.
  • Tinctures are processed and concentrated forms of CBD that are placed under the tongue using a dropper.
  • Pills and capsules are ingested orally and look similar to the vitamins and/or drugs you’d find in a drugstore.
  • Topicals are CBD-infused oils, creams, and lotions that are used as a way to treat localized pain.
  • Vaping involves inhaling a vaporized liquid that contains CBD oil.

Most importantly, you should always look for high-quality CBD. Avoid purchasing products from gas stations, coffee shops, or any other place which is not required to test the quality and purity of their products.
