And in this episode, Benjamin Bey and Stepanie interview a very special budtender – Zulema Lino of Essence Cannabis Dispensary in Las Vegas. The three talk about her passion for budtending, her awards, and what she thinks it takes to become the best of the best.

In 2019, Zulema Lino was presented with the CBD Award. This honored distinction was presented by Dana Workman of Canna Kids. According to the award criteria, the CBD Award goes to a budtender who’s a ‘bonafide CBD expert who knows the attributes, history, and evolution of the many variations of CBD. More importantly, they have the expertise to help guide anyone to the perfect remedy for their specific needs. Finally, “They set the bar high for others to follow when it comes to promoting a better future and lifestyle through natural healing.”

What Does a Good Budtender Do?

According to Zulema Lino, not everyone can be a world-class budtender. It’s a very fast-paced industry and many people come in with little or no knowledge of the product they’re looking for. When it comes to helping out cannabis newbies and enthusiasts, it’s important to listen and understand what their needs are. However, it’s even more important to know what you’re talking about. You have to keep educating your self all the time. Occasionally, you may even need to play the role of “advisor” or “therapist”. It all depends on the customer and the situation.

It’s important to present a positive face for the industry and to be informed about new products, terpenes, cannabinoids, and more. Additionally, you have to deal with the constant changes happening in a budding industry. Laws are being updated regularly all over the country, and Nevada is no exception. This is true for both medical and recreational users. Mainly, a good budtender will ensure comfort and enjoyment; both with the product and the patient experience.

Finally, people assume that budtending is an easy job. However, that’s not exactly the case. Teamwork is vital and it’s important to stay on your toes… literally and figuratively. It’s extremely important to keep up with trends and get to know your customers. Above all, it’s important to redefine what it means to serve the community.

Zulema Lino is a budtender who’s worked at Essence Dispensary since 2016. While most budtenders hop from dispensary to dispensary, Zulema Lino has worked at the Henderson location for her entire career. Additionally, Zulema Lino is an award-winning budtender. She won the CBD Award in 2019 and was nominated again in 2020.

Her goal is to help cannabis users blossom and understand how they can find the best products for them. Additionally, she wants to help eliminate the stigma of cannabis use. Finally, she wants to help people broaden their knowledge and bring cannabis usage to the mainstream. She’s doing this at Essence, one customer at a time.
